May is International Doula Month

BY Tara Jaskowiak

The word ‘doula’ comes from the ancient Greek, meaning ‘a woman who serves’.

A doula is an amazing support to a family going through such an incredible life transition. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labours are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

Doulas support women. It doesn’t matter if you are having a home-birth, hospital birth or if you are are cared for by doctors or midwives. The doula serves the woman. A doula works in collaboration with the birth team to provide continuity of care and a personal connection throughout the birthing experience.

A birth doula provides physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. A postpartum doula provides emotional and practical support after the baby arrives.

There are a number of doulas practicing in Lunenburg County. So ask around, and you might find out that you already know a doula in your community or know someone who has benefited from doula support.
